A bright breezy Sunday morning greeted the 450 runners in the Port of Blyth 10K on April 12th.The fast, flat seafront course, over two laps saw Houghton’s Alex Brown leading the charge from the gun, tracked by Gateshead’s Lewis Liddle and followed ten metres later by a group which contained Alnwick’s Liam McDonogh.
The positions remained largely unchanged at the front as Brown extended his lead to thirty seconds for a comfortable victory on the second lap in 31:37. Liddle was clear in second on 32:07 whilst McDonogh consolidated his position in third, as he pulled clear of the chasing group in 32:38.
Jess Eaton and Hannah Stewart of Tyne Bridge Harriers dominated the women’s race with Morpeth’s Holly Lawrence finishing strongly for third place. Eaton edged away from Stewart on the second lap to finish in 37:27 compared to her clubmate’s 37:45 and Lawrence held off Houghton’s Anna Pigford in a battle for third in 38:41 to 38:50.
All credit to Race Director, Claire Mason and her friendly team of volunteers for a well organised and inclusive event that attracted some of the area’s leading athletes but also proved popular with less serious club and recreational runners.
