NECAA have announced an exciting programme of road running events for next year, combining some long established club events with some of the region’s most prestigious events. It is hoped that NECAA will be in a position to announce an ‘endurance grand prix’ early next year which will seek to motivate the region’s best athletes to contest the North-East Championships.
The season will kick off with the fast flat sea front course at the Blyth 10K on April 12th and will be followed by the Quayside 5K on April 22nd which is a partnership between Wallsend Harriers and Run Through. This super-fast course saw Derby’s Olympian, Ben Connor scorch to a 13:42 time last August and Sophie Pikett of Elswick triumphed in the women’s event in April in an impressive 16:22, whilst the record belongs to Aldershot’s Lily Partridge with her 15:42 in 2024.
The reputation of The Blaydon Race is already legendary in North-East running circles, with its high-quality fields, 5,000 runners and generous prize list. We will be announcing some privileged access for the leading athletes from the region, early next year. Blaydon always takes place on its traditional date of 9th June. Calum Johnson has now clocked up four consecutive victories in the event and Sonia Samuels has won twice.
The Great North Run, which dates back to 1981, has hosted both World and British Championships in the past and next year will host the North-East Championships for the first time on September 13th. The region’s best will join 60,000 runners as they head from Newcastle to South Shields. Our athletes will line up behind the ‘super elite’ men and women and we will announce some special NECAA entry arrangements in the New Year.
Heaton’s long-established event on the Town Moor will host our young athlete’s events for the first time, over 3K on November 8th after hosting the Senior 10K Championships for several years.
The Brampton to Carlisle Road Race, as one of Britain’s oldest events and one of the few 10-mile races that remain on public roads will round off the season. This year’s event saw Leeds City’s Ed Bovingdon claim the title in 48:34 in almost perfect conditions, with Morpeth’s Carl Avery claiming the North-East title in 48:50. Esme Davies of Border Harriers took the women’s crown in a pacey 54:26, with Morpeth’s Holly Lawrence taking the NECAA title in 60:17.
