Around 3,500 individuals participated in the Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon weekend, which included a variety of races. However, the experiences of some runners were tarnished by the actions of unregistered runners in the half marathon. In one case, a male runner wore a female runner’s number despite being told that this was not allowed. He proceeded to lead the race before being persuaded to step off the course. In another case, an athlete crossed the finish line first, but was later found to be wearing someone else’s number and was not registered for the event. This deprived the actual winner of their moment of glory and caused confusion during prize presentations. The organizers have clear terms and conditions for all entrants and condemn the actions of these runners and anyone who was complicit in them. Appropriate action will be taken following discussions with officials and race adjudicators.
