Morpeth Harriers at the Double in Brampton to Carlisle
Carl Avery, a former winner of the event and clubmate Holly Lawrence, both of Morpeth Harriers claimed victory in their respective NECAA Championships on Sunday November 16th in the 73rd running of the Brampton to Carlisle road race. As the race set off at 10am on a still, crisp autumn morning a leading group of eight runners soon established themselves at the front of the race and by 2.5 miles they were already 100 metres clear of the chasing group. Carl Avery was intent on driving the pace, knocking out 4.50 miles. Between 5 and 6 miles eight became six runners in contention. By eight miles the six were down to five. With 250 metres to go Carl was still in a comfortable second place but as Leeds City’s Ed Bovingdon strode away to a thirteen second winning margin in an impressive 48:34, Richmond and Zetland’s Rob Scott, brother of Olympic 10,000 metre runner Marc, held off a fast finishing John Battrick from Keswick in 48:46 and 48:47 respectively. Carl followed in close order on 48:50 to claim the NE title. Lee Davies of NE Project took second in 50:40 and Sunderland’s Stephen Jackson took third in 51:37.
The women’s race was a close run affair for second and third place, while Holly Lawrence was first North East lady home in a time of 60:17, with Heaton’s Jo Woodcock second lady in 60:18. Morpeth’s Lizzie Rank completed the podium in 61:26
Thanks go to Race Director, Ross Landon and his team from Border Harriers who put on a superb event with 889 finishers, retaining their title as Britain’s oldest road race.
